What kind of disease is MS (Multiple Sclerosis)?

MS is a disease of the nervous system. It occurs due to degeneration in the myelin sheaths of the nerves. This disease, which has no definitive treatment and progresses with attacks, also affects the brain and spinal cord, affecting the sensory and balance systems.

There is no definitive cause or treatment for MS, although genetic factors are also thought to be effective. The type and severity of MS may vary depending on the level of damage to the myelin sheaths in the nerves.

Does age matter in MS disease?

MS particularly affects adults between the ages of 20 and 40, and is more common in women.

What causes Multiple Sclerosis? What are the risk factors?

Although MS does not have a clear cause, it is thought to be caused by some reasons. These reasons are;

Genetic factors,

• It is more common in women than in men

• Contact with herpes virus

• Contact with some harmful chemicals

• Congenital damages occurring during pregnancy.

What are the symptoms for MS?

It manifests itself with various symptoms;

• Having problems with vision

• Muscle weakness begins to appear

• Beginning of walking difficulties

• Having balance problems

• The onset of numbness or tingling sensation

• Muscle stiffness and cramps

• Occurrence of urinary incontinence problems

• Sexual disorders

• Increase in depression…

What is the diagnostic method for MS disease?

The priority is physical examination, a detailed neurological examination is required. Nerve, muscle and reflex evaluation is performed. Patient complaints are listened to carefully. Early intervention and start of treatment is very important.

It may be necessary to examine the cerebrospinal fluid and nerves in detail. Imaging methods such as MRI may also be used.

Treatment in Multiple Sclerosis:

Attacks may occur in MS, so patients should avoid activities that will tire them out and stay away from habits that will negatively affect their health, such as alcohol and cigarettes. Stress, anxiety and fatigue are known as triggers of attacks.

There is no definitive treatment for MS disease. In line with the patients' complaints and symptoms, treatment is started in order to facilitate daily life and the person's life, and the aim is to prevent attacks.

Physical therapy has a very important place in the lives of MS patients. Physical therapy should be started for muscle weakness, pain, balance problems and sensory problems that begin to appear. Muscles need to be strengthened and balance improved through various exercises. At the same time, MS patients need to receive psychological support due to the attacks and anxiety they experience.
