What is CPM?

What is this CPM?

Joints in the body need to be moved passively in some cases. For a patient who cannot provide active movement, an external force must be used passively to ensure joint movement. But these passive movements are quite tiring for both the person performing the procedure and the patient.

CPM devices, known as "Continuous Passive Motion" in English and "Continuous Passive Motion" in Turkish, are one of the biggest helpers in providing these passive movements. Passive movement is very important, especially to eliminate limitations, edema, pain or muscle weakness that occur after surgery. CPM is an important savior in these patients where active movement cannot be achieved or in cases where sufficient degree of movement cannot be achieved.

What are the benefits of the CPM Device?

CPM devices increase the degree of movement of the joint along with passive movement. The degrees, duration and speed of the movement can be adjusted. In this way, it provides a safe treatment by preventing excessive force or overuse.

It reduces inflammation, pain, edema and limitation with the passive movement it provides. It prevents the patient from losing muscle strength by providing passive movement after surgery by using it on limbs such as ankle, wrist, knee and shoulder. It is also effective in preventing complications such as edema. It also increases the healing speed by increasing blood circulation and tissue nutrition with movement.

In addition, it increases not only blood circulation but also the movements of tissue fluid, reducing edema and providing nutrition to the tissues.

How are CPM applications made?

The limb to be passively moved is placed on the device. The device is operated by adjusting the degree and speed. Passive movement of the limb begins. There are CPM devices for ankle, wrist, knee, hip, shoulder and elbow.

In which areas and in which diseases can CPM devices be used?

• CPM devices can be used after many surgical interventions. It eliminates the limitations and increases the range of motion with passive movement in the joints where there are restrictions after surgery.

• Used in fracture rehabilitation

• Used after prosthesis surgeries

• Reduces edema

• Reduces inflammation

• In cases where active movement cannot be provided, passive movement is provided to the patient.

• It provides support in cases where muscle strength is insufficient and protects muscle mass / increases muscle strength.
