What Causes Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the name given to a group of diseases characterized by physical movement and posture disorders, which begin in childhood and can continue throughout life. It can literally be defined as difficulty in brain (cerebral) and muscle control or coordination (palsy). This condition, which affects millions of families and individuals worldwide, is caused by damage to the brain or developmental problems before, during, or after birth. As Robotic Rehabilitation Center, we want to provide information about cerebral palsy and shed light on the treatment processes related to the disease.

Causes of Cerebral Palsy

The causes of cerebral palsy have a wide range and are often complex and multifactorial. The most common factors that play a role in the emergence of the disease are genetic tendencies, health problems experienced by the mother during pregnancy, premature birth, low birth weight, lack of oxygen in the baby and brain infections.
Since the early stages of pregnancy are the period when the developing baby's brain structure is most sensitive, any problems that occur during this period can increase the risk of developing cerebral palsy. Additionally, some infections (for example, rubella or toxoplasmosis) or poisonings (for example, lead poisoning) that can affect the baby in the womb can also lead to brain damage.
Complications during birth, such as labor taking too long or too fast, the baby getting stuck in the birth canal, or a baby suffering from lack of oxygen, can also cause cerebral palsy. In the postnatal period, brain trauma, brain inflammation (such as meningitis or encephalitis) and traumatic brain injuries may trigger the emergence of cerebral palsy.

Cerebral Palsy Symptoms and Diagnosis

Cerebral palsy symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of the disease. General symptoms include decreased muscle strength, muscle spasms, coordination problems, balance and posture disorders, and fine or gross motor skill difficulties. The location and extent of damage to the brain can affect the severity and variety of symptoms.
The diagnostic process often requires a multifaceted approach, combining the child's medical history, physical examination, and various tests (for example, brain imaging technologies) to make an evaluation. Early diagnosis and intervention can greatly improve the development of individuals with cerebral palsy, which is why we emphasize the importance of early intervention at the Robotic Rehabilitation Center.

Types of Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is divided into different classifications based on the muscle groups affected and the type of movement disorder. These include spastic cerebral palsy, athetoid cerebral palsy, and ataxic cerebral palsy. Spastic cerebral palsy is the most common form and is characterized by muscle stiffness and limitation of movements. Athetoid cerebral palsy occurs with irregular and uncontrolled movements, and ataxic cerebral palsy occurs with problems in balance and depth perception. Each type requires specific treatment approaches, highlighting the importance of the individualized treatment plans we offer at Robotic Rehabilitation Center.
