Stroke is damage to an area of the brain as a result of blockage of blood flow in the brain vessels or bleeding into the brain. In other words, stroke or CVO (Cerebrovascular Event); It is a suddenly developing vascular syndrome characterized by symptoms such as loss of motor control in one half of the body, sensory disorders, cognitive disorders, slurred speech, imbalance, or coma.

While stroke ranks third as a cause of death after heart diseases and cancer, its incidence rate in our country is stated as 177 people out of 100,000.

So how can we understand that we have had a stroke?

Although there is no specific test, some symptoms are seen as signs of a stroke. Sudden numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body, difficulty swallowing, sudden, severe headache of unknown cause; It may be thought that you have a stroke with symptoms such as sudden confusion in thinking, difficulty speaking or understanding others.

A comprehensive evaluation is performed to obtain information about the general condition of the patient after stroke, to determine the prognosis, and to provide an appropriate physical therapy program. A rehabilitation program is started in line with the information obtained. Starting time in stroke treatment is very important. Treatment started at an early stage, treating disorders that cause functional disabilities and maximizing functional independence gives more positive results.

The basic principles in the rehabilitation process are targeted treatment strategies after an accurate and adequate evaluation. Then, since motor learning is an active process, patients' active participation in exercises and activities should be encouraged.

The most important element in rehabilitation is that the program is goal-oriented. Realistic and feasible goals should be determined between the patient, family and professionals at regular intervals during the treatment.
