Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is one of the common neural tube defects. The reason is not exactly known. Research shows that folic acid deficiency may be one of the causes of the disease. There are three forms of spina bfida. Spina bifida occulta, meningocele, myolameningocele. While occulta is the mildest form, myolaningocele is the most severe form.
After the baby is born, the neural opening is closed surgically. Most of these babies also undergo shunt surgery because there is an abnormal increase in cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. Many children also have urinary disorders. That's why they need to be followed well. Depending on the location of the defect, different symptoms occur from patient to patient. Loss of muscle strength, loss of sensation and resulting deformities occur in the lower extremities. Children with spina bifida experience walking problems. These children should be evaluated and a treatment program should be developed by developing a holistic approach with physical therapy. Various orthoses and walkers are used for walking. Since each patient is special, a treatment program specific to each child should be developed across multiple disciplines.
