Schroth Exercise

While the Schroth exercise method was developed primarily for idiopathic scoliosis in young adolescents and idiopathic scoliosis seen at older ages, it implements a treatment program with modified movements for early-onset scoliosis and adults.

The main goals of Schroth exercises are to restore normal postural smoothness by providing static and dynamic balance control, to stop the progression of the curve or help it to regress, to reduce pain, and to help reduce the need for disease-related surgery by gaining correct posture habits. The basis of the Schroth approach; It is to actively restore postural correctness to the patient, improve postural awareness by correcting incorrect posture by applying self-stretching and regional exercises.

The Schroth method, which includes a 3-dimensional approach as a scoliosis exercise, aims to reorganize the disturbed body balance. It is planned individually in the light of the concept known as functional segment. Schroth method mainly; It includes rotational breathing, pelvic correction, core stabilization, correct positioning, appropriate mobilization, stretching practices, and daily life activities focused on symmetrical awareness. The Schroth approach uses unique corrective breathing. Rotational breathing is used to correct the rib cage affected by scoliosis and is one of the most important building blocks of the Schroth method. Breathing technique is determined according to the shape and direction of the curvature.

Exercise bars and mirrors are essential items used. Visual, auditory and manual stimuli given by the therapist support recovery. Exercises are performed for stretching, proper positioning of the arms and trunk, and strengthening of the muscles. The aim is to correct curvatures by applying pressure to various body parts with floor exercises and sandbags. The basis of these movements are breathing exercises that focus on inflating the part of the body that seems to have collapsed inwards.

That's why these exercises can only be performed by physiotherapists who specialize in this field.
