Multiple Sclerosis: What is it and what are its symptoms?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that affects the central nervous system and usually targets young adults. It is characterized by damage to the myelin sheath in the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves. This causes nerve cells to slow down or stop messages altogether. Although the cause of MS is not known for certain, it is thought to be an autoimmune disorder and genetic predisposition and environmental factors may be triggers.

The most common symptoms of MS disease include fatigue, vision problems, balance and coordination difficulties, numbness or tingling, muscle weakness and spasms, speech difficulties, and cognitive changes. Symptoms vary from person to person and may occur in relapsing or progressive form. Although MS can occur at any age, it is most often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40 and is more common in women than men.
